County Information
Established February 23, 1854
This county was named for a Dakota woman, Winona, cousin of the last chief named Wabasha, both of whom were prominent in the events attending the removal in 1848 of the Winnebago Indians from Iowa to Wabasha's prairie (the site of the city of Winona) and thence to Long Prairie in Todd county.

Winona sights include Sugar Loaf Mountain
This was a limestone bluff that was quarried off for building material in the early days of the city.
The quarry eventually closed and this is what's left of the bluff.

Sugar Loaf Mountain on the left, 1898 and on the right 117 years later.
[Many thanks to John Bauer for the 1898 image and Dawn K. for the 2015 image.]
