Grant Parish Grant Parish, with an area of 700 square miles, was established March 4, 1869, during the reconstruction period, while Henry Clay Warmouth was governor, and was named in honor of Ulysses S. Grant, then president of the United States. The southern part of Winn and the northern part of Rapides were taken to form the parish of Grant, which is bounded on the north by Winn parish; on the east by Little river, which separates it from Catahoula parish; on the south by Rapides parish, and the Rigolet de Bon Dieu and the Red river form its western boundary separating it from Rapides and Natchitoches parishes. After the organization of the parish Colfax was made the seat of parochial government. During the first half of the 19th century great plantations were started in what is now Grant parish.
