Henry County, Illinois
Henry County, Illinois was created 13
January 1825 from Fulton County, Illinois. It was named after Patrick
Henry - a Revolutionary war period lawyer, orator and statesman. Henry
County government was started in 1837. The first county seat was Richmond
(Richmond no longer exists) established in 1837 and was the county seat until
1839. Geneseo served as a temporary county seat from 1839-1840. The next
county seat was Morristown which served as the county seat from 1840-1843.
Morristown was very unpopular due to its location and in 1844 land was
donated west of Sugar Tree Grove, known today as Cambridge and the county
seat was moved there. Cambridge has remained the county seat ever since.
