Hancock County Information
Hancock County was founded in 1844, created from parts of Hawkins and Claiborne counties. It was named in honor of John Hancock who was Governor of Massachusetts 1780-1785 and again from 1787 until his death in 1793. He served as a member of the Continental Congress 1775-1780 and presided over the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. He was the first to sign it and did so in letters so large so as to ensure everyone who saw it knew his intent.
The county seat is Sneedville, formerly known as Greasy Rock, but re-named for William Sneed, an attorney who defended the creation of the county from legal challenges brought up by surrounding Hawkins and Claiborne counties.
With a 2022 population of 6695, Hancock County is the fourth smallest of the 95 counties in Tennessee.
Only Moore, Van Buren and Pickett Counties are smaller by population.
