Hancock County Information

Hancock County was founded in 1844, created from parts of Hawkins and Claiborne counties. It was named in honor of John Hancock who was Governor of Massachusetts 1780-1785 and again from 1787 until his death in 1793. He served as a member of the Continental Congress 1775-1780 and presided over the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. He was the first to sign it and did so in letters so large so as to ensure everyone who saw it knew his intent.

The county seat is Sneedville, formerly known as Greasy Rock, but re-named for William Sneed, an attorney who defended the creation of the county from legal challenges brought up by surrounding Hawkins and Claiborne counties.

With a 2022 population of 6695, Hancock County is the fourth smallest of the 95 counties in Tennessee.
Only Moore, Van Buren and Pickett Counties are smaller by population.

Be a Volunteer!

If you have a love for history and a desire to preserve and make information freely available so others can discover their past, consider helping!

There are several ways you can help preserve a legacy:

1) If you have digital copies of old documents (I prefer pre-1950) that you can share, send them to me.

2) If you have the ability and desire to transcribe data from newspaper clippings, from letters, or from tombstones into text files that I can post, send them to me.

3) If you have basic web-authoring skills and a little free time, host a county, transcribe data, and maintain its site.

Get the details on our Volunteer Page.
