Genealogy Trails Group Originally named Twality when created on July 5, 1843, it was renamed by the Oregon Territorial Legislature in 1849 after George Washington, the nation's first president. At that time, it included the entire northwest corner of Oregon. In 1854, the new counties of Columbia and Multnomah were created and the size of Washington County decreased dramatically. In 2014, sections of Mulnomah County were reattached to Washington county. Columbia, later known as Hillsboro, was selected as the county seat in 1850. The 2020 census showed Washington County as being the 2nd most populous county in the state.
