Clay County was formed from Madison, Knox, and Floyd Counties.
Created in 1806 and est. in 1807, is the 47th county in order.
Named after Gen. Green Clay (1757-1826); a military leader in the War of 1812.
He was also representative of Kentucky Countyin the Virginia General Assembly.
The County seat is Manchester.
