Jewell County
Founded February 26, 1887
Named for Lt. Col. Lewis R. Jewell, of the Sixth Kansas cavalry, who died of wounds received in the battle of Cane Hill, Ark.
The earliest known settlement was made by William Harshberger and wife on White Rock creek in 1862.
The county seat and most populous city is Mankato
