County Information
Grant County was formed in 1831 by settlers from Kentucky and Virginia.
Grant County is named in honor of Captain Samuel Grant and his brother, Moses Grant, who were killed in 1789, in a battle with Native Americans.
This happened near Grant Creek in the northeast part of Switzerland county, Indiana, very near the Ohio River.
The surface of Grant county is quite level, except for a strip along the Mississinewa river, where it is decidedly rolling. It was originally heavily timbered. The soil, without exception, is rich and well adapted to the cultivation of grain, grass, fruit, etc. The farmers of the county are all blessed with abundant harvests and are growing wealthy and independent. Marion, a town of two thousand five hundred inhabitants, is the county seat, and a thrifty place.
[The info in these two paragraph is taken
from a book written about the County in 1886]
The Mississinewa River runs through the county.
The last lynching in Indiana occurred in this county. On 7 August 1930, a mob of an estimated 5,000 people took three African-American men, Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith, both 19, and James Cameron, 16, from the county jail. They were suspects in a robbery/murder and rape. The first two were hanged from trees in the courthouse square. Cameron was spared and later became a civil rights activist.
