Las
Animas County was established in 1866 and took its name from the river
which flows in the area, the El Rio de los Animas Perdidas en
Purgatorio, which means "River of the Lost Souls in Purgatory."

Las Animas County has the largest area of the 64 counties of the State
of Colorado
The county's population was 15,207 at the 2000 census
