Fulton County Courthouse

Fulton County
Founded: 1838
Named for Robert Fulton
County Seat: Johnstown
Largest City: Gloversville

Fulton County was formed by the State Legislature on April 18, 1838, out of Montgomery County, and is named for Robert Fulton, who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat.

Fulton County is home to New York State’s oldest continuously operating courthouse, located in Johnstown.
Built in 1772 by Sir William Johnson, as the old Tryon County courthouse (later the Montgomery County courthouse),
this courthouse has seen the transition from British colonial rule to the establishment of the United States. In 1812, the Sheldon-Southwick trial was held in this courthouse, after Alexander Sheldon, a former Speaker of the State Assembly, had charged that one Solomon Southwick of the Town of Charleston had attempted to bribe him to vote in favor of incorporating the Bank of America in New York City. Southwick retained Aaron Burr and was aquitted of the charge.

Shortly after the American Revolutionary War, the manufacture of gloves and leather became the area's primary industry. At one point, Johnstown and Gloversville were known as the world's Glove and Leather capital.
