Posey County, Indiana
This county, formed September 1814 from parts of Gibson and Warrick counties, was named in honor of General Thomas Posey,
who was appointed governor of the Indiana Territory to succeed General Harrison.
Posey county is located in the southwest corner of the State of Indiana where the Ohio and Wabash rivers meet.
Its southern border is formed by the Ohio River, and its western border by the Wabash River.
The county was first settled by people from the Upper South, many of whom arrived via the Ohio River. Farming was the primary development in its early history.
Posey County is now (in 2022) the seventh-largest internal port in the United States, based on the tons of materials handled. Grain from the Midwest is among the products shipped.
Mount Vernon was designated as the county seat in 1825.
Its port on the Ohio River continues to be integral to the economy of the state and county.
New Harmony, located on the Wabash River, is also a flourishing town of Posey County.
It is a historic town noted for the literary taste of its citizens, and for its education and refinement.
Other towns are Cynthiana, Griffin and Poseyville.
