County Information County Seat: Fonda Year Organized: 1772 Square Miles: 405 Prior to settlement, the area was occupied by the Mohawk people, one of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy. The county was created in 1772 during the period of British colonial rule and named Tryon County. The name was changed in 1784, in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War General who was killed in 1775 at the Battle of Quebec.
