COLUMBIA lies in the extreme southern portion of the State; In 1872, the population was 11,397. Magnolia is the county site. Timber, holly, beech, pine and oak; land level, with some ridges; soil rich, producing fine crops of cotton. The county was formed on December 17, 1852, and was, in all likelihood, named for Christopher Columbus. Dorcheat Bayou flows through Columbia County from its origin in Nevada County southward into Webster Parish, Louisiana, before emptying into Lake Bistineau.
